We all have our own personal brand, and emotional intelligence, based on accurate self-awareness, is the foundation.
Your personal brand leaves a first impression and a lasting impression. Your personal brand is composed of your work experience and education, the benefits those talents provide, your interactions with customers and coworkers, your values, and your personality.
So, what is your background? What have you been up to for the last 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 years? Consider your educational background and work experience. Compile a list of all of the classes, courses, seminars, and workshops you have taken and the certifications, degrees, and diplomas you have earned.
Now consider the functional benefits of these talents, abilities, and skills. Think about what you know and what you can do, and how your organization benefits. Does your experience improve decision-making, help recognize opportunities, or maintain morale?
Next consider your coworker and customer relationships. How do internal and external customers feel when they work with you? What are the emotional rewards they feel after interacting with you. Do they consistently feel Informed? Valued? Relieved? Reassured? Understood?
Next, what are your values, standards, and ethics? What are the principles you rely on for making decisions and for maintaining your integrity?
And finally, your personality. What is it like to work with you, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year? Are you consistently optimistic? Friendly? Open-minded? Approachable?
The answers to these questions will reflect your personal brand.
Take inventory of your work experience and educational background and identify how others benefit. Enhance your personal brand by honing your skills and talents that are scarce and valued in your organization.
